SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -Southwest Arkansas law enforcement officers are continuing their investigations into what police are calling two separate homicides in Magnolia.
The two deaths occurred within hours of each other and police are asking for the community’s help in bringing the cases to a solution.
"We don't believe the two incidents were related," says Magnolia Police Chief Todd Dew.
Magnolia Arkansas police chief Todd Dew said Monday his city registered it's first two homicides of the year. The chief said around 12 noon an officer was patrolling when flagged down by a citizen indicating there had been a shooting.
When the officer arrived at this vacant house on Norma Street he found 22-year-old Jarious Shaw lying in the backyard suffering from a gunshot wound.
Shaw later died at Magnolia Regional Medical Center. No one has been arrested but the chief said they do have a person of interest.
“We are trying to determine a motive now that is one of the things we are doing this morning that’s not clear.”
Just blocks away from this scene and 6 and a half hours later police was call to Magnuson Hotel for what they say was another homicide in room 125.
“A person staying at the hotel had made a report to the desk clerk and the police was called from there.”
Chief Dew would not release details on the report nor the victim’s name pending further investigation. He did say there was no suspect in this case. The chief said the two separate homicide investigations are spreading his small department thin.
“Very taxing we have two full-time detectives and me and a captain who also have investigative experience,” says Chief Todd Dew
The chief said as they work to solve these cases the citizens of Magnolia should still feel safe.
“But I don’t think we have anything right now that would show anybody in particular being in any further danger.”
Anyone with information on either investigation they are asked to contact the Magnolia police department.
