37 vote victory in Minden mayor’s race

New Minden mayor ready for challenges

MINDEN, LA (KSLA) - The race for Minden mayor ended with a 37 vote win for Republican candidate Terry Gardner. His opponent was Democrat William “Winky” Newer. The city’s current mayor, Tommy Davis, did not seek re-election.

Several voters in Minden say their main concerns are high utility bills, infrastructure and improving downtown businesses. They know it is a difficult challenge but say they believe the mayor can get things done.

“I would like to see the community get better with more businesses, opportunities, outdoor events and bringing the community together,” voter Adam Martin says. “This city has so much to offer.”

Mayor-elect Gardner noted how his campaign went door to door and listened to the concerns of voters. He wants them to know that their concerns are not going to go unheard.

“Our goal is to grow our city, add and expand current businesses and nurture the businesses that are already here,” Mayor-elect Gardner says. “When I first moved to Webster Parish I had 500 dollars and today I own three businesses.”

Mayor-elect Gardner’s term will begin on January 1, 2019. He says he can’t wait to get started improving the city.
