ALEXANDRIA, LA (KALB/KSLA) - Authorities went looking for a woman in Red River at Alexandria and instead found a man’s body.

City police got calls Sunday morning about a woman possibly attempting suicide by jumping off the Jackston Street bridge, CBS affiliate KALB reports.

Alexandria firefighters, Rapides sheriff’s deputies and Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries agents were called in to help search the river.

“We have those other agencies I mentioned providing a bunch of resources to us. Sonar, search-and-rescue dogs,” Alexandria police Cpl. Wade Bourgeois said. “I think we may be having a helicopter come out here, but I’m not sure about that yet.”

Instead of finding the woman, searchers discovered the body of someone who appears to be an elderly man about a mile downriver near Willow Glen Road.

“Of course, the coroner’s been called,” Bourgeois said. “And they’ll do what they need to do to get the male subject out of the river and begin the investigation on that.”

As of yet, authorities told KALB, there is no indication that the discovery of his body is related to the initial report about the woman.

“So we’re conducting two different investigations at this time,” Bourgeois said.
