TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) - Silence filled the air this morning at Texarkana Regional Airport as leaders here joined other airports across the country in remembering the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

The U.S. Marine Corps League, Detachment 1149 is a local veterans organization sponsored today's ceremony.

A spokesman for the league said they hope to make this an annual event.

"We like to recognize the first responders and I think this is important that we do this every year," said Sgt. Richard hall.

Approximately 7:46 a.m. (central standard time) that morning the first plane hit the World Trade Center in New York becoming the worse terror strike on the nation.

Erwin Bardwell brought his grandchildren to the ceremony. Erwin said he hopes the event will give the children the importance of solidarity.

"If there ever was a day we the people were united that was the day," Bardwell said.

Sgt. Hall said the Marine Corps League is seeking more members. If you are a retired marine you can signup by visiting a corps meeting.

The group gathers at 7 p.m.on the second Thursday of each month at the Texarkana Texas Elks Club.
